(At Thabile’s home, the family is having breakfast.)
Bhengu: Yazi wena Macele, uyayitotosa lengane. (Macele, you are spoiling this child.)
Macele: Hawu kodwa baba, Thabile is still young and she is bound to such a life as a child. Don’t act as if you’ve never been young yourself.
Bhengu: Don’t compare two different things. In our olden days we listened to our elders. No meant no and we never questioned that. (He sips his coffee.)
Macele: I know, baba, but we’re living in a different time now. Let the child make her own mistakes and she will learn from them. (She releases a heavy sigh.)
(Thabile joins her parents for breakfast.)
Thabile: Good morning to my favourite people in the world. (She kisses both her parents.)
Bhengu: Good morning princess, how are you?
Thabile: I have a headache, but I’m fine thanks.
Macele: Last night was hectic ne?
(Bhengu interrupts before Thabile can talk.)
Bhengu: Macele, how can you condone such a thing?
Macele: (Smiling) Baba, you’re exaggerating, let the child breathe hawu.
Thabile: Tshepo and I, we are going to Cape Town in two weeks’ time. I am so happy.
Bhengu: I am starting to regret this. Couldn’t you find a nearby university?
Thabile: Relax, dad, I will be on my best behaviour. (She laughs at her dad.)
