(At the court, on the day of the hearing. Nkosana is escorted in by the police. He is handcuffed and in orange uniform. He looks for Alicia but he sees only Nkosi and gets so worried that he almost faints. He takes a seat, he knowing his life is over now, instantly losing hope and interest in the court proceedings.)

Judge: Good morning, ladies and gentleman. Calling the case of Mihlali Disi versus Nkosana Zikhalithe. Are both sides ready to proceed?

(Prosecutor and defendant both confirm readiness)

Judge You may make your opening statements and present your evidence.

Prosecutor: (Standing) Thank you, my Lord. My Lord, the accused has been charged with the crime of rape that took place on the 12th of November 2017 in his residential home, and crime of assault, which happened before and after the incident of rape. The evidence gathered will show that my client and the accused were in a relationship when all the incidents happened. Furthermore, it will reveal how my client was harassed in public and how the accused threatened to kill her after the incident of rape. My Lord, the evidence will show to you that the defendant is a danger to society and deserves a hefty sentence.

(A group of women present start chanting, “Yes he deserves to rot in jail!” Tiger and Lwazi are ready to celebrate. Nkosana’s eyes wander around, still hoping to see Alicia.)

Nkosi (Standing) Your Honour, ladies and gentlemen, my client is presumed innocent until proven guilty. My Lord, this is the defendant’s first appearance in court. During this trial you will hear no real evidence against my client. You will come to the truth that the accused was a caring and loving boyfriend to the accuser. All evidence gathered will prove the deplorable activities of the accuser and show that she approached my client after the day she claimed she was raped.

Judge: State, you may call your first witness.
