I’m 18-years-old, but I swear my heart feels older. It all started in high school, the one place where most of us start engaging in relationships with the opposite sex, the one place where we think we’re destined to find our first love. Well, that’s what I thought until reality kicked me right in the heart.

October 2015. It was culture week at our school and we were rehearsing for the show. I looked at this one guy and our eyes made contact. We attended the same school for 3 years, but I guess neither one of us noticed each other before. Well, it certainly changed after that day.

I was standing at my locker trying to open the lock. I pulled and pulled then the last thing I saw was me on the floor and this cute guy standing in front of me. I felt so embarrassed. My mind said “Run away” but my heart yelled, “Stay!”

He picked me up and helped me with my locker and then he asked me out. I was speechless; I didn’t know what to say so I told him that I would think about it.

We were writing exams the next day and as we waited patiently to be called in the register class, he showed up.

He spoke to my register teacher then and she called me.

“There’s someone for you,” he said.

“No sit,” he said. “I just wanted to tell you that I can’t stop thinking about you and that you’re my future. But most important of all you’re the very first girl who stole my heart at first sight.”

I didn’t know how to react, but I couldn’t stop myself from blushing. As time went on we had our first kiss and our date. Everything went well for a while, but not every love story ends perfectly.

The bell rang for the first day of school of the new term. I knew something was wrong when he didn’t fetch me at home to walk me to school that morning, he was ignoring me.

“Is it something I’ve done or am I simply not good enough for him anymore?” I asked my friend.

“You’re worried about nothing,” she replied.

Was I? No!

I found out that he met another girl and asked her out with the exact same words he used on me. I was broken. I cried for days and all he could say was, “Babe, I don’t know where my feelings are any more.”

My heart was scattered into pieces. Months went by before I was finally over him. I met someone new, someone totally different. He wanted me back as soon as he saw I was happy with someone other than him.

I never spoke to him after I sent him to hell. You don’t just break a girl’s heart and expect her to forgive you anytime you want her to. I forgave him, but I didn’t tell him that I did. He did what made him happy at the expense of my emotions and that doesn’t sit well with me. I am independent, I don’t need a man to remind me that I’m a strong young woman.
