“Who Am I?” Have you ever asked yourself that question? I know I have, many times. Who am I? What is my purpose in life? Those are the two most important questions you need to ask yourself as a young person.

A lot of young people struggle to find their identity. We live in a superficial world where we are told to “fake it till you make it” and that is why many young people pretend to be something they are not. Social media plays a huge role in this. Young people try to imitate what they see from social media.

I was once part of the group that followed every single trend they saw on social media. I had this ‘if celebrities are doing it why can’t I?’ mentality. I wanted to be like them so badly. I started copying everything from their style of dressing to the way they spoke. I even copied the movies/music they watched or listened to. Little did I know that I was living someone else’s life instead of my own.

As a young person you must surround yourself with the right company. I was lucky enough to have friends who were able to show me the right way. They made me see that I didn’t have to follow each and every trend just so I could feel like I was living. I am self-defined; I am not defined by what other people are doing. Instead of following trends, set you own trend. It’s ok to be different; it makes you unique. If you feel like you don’t know who you are, where your life is headed, you want to find your identity, just know you are self-defined. You don’t need other people to define who you are. You are a strong, young woman/man. You make your own choices. You set your own trends. You set your own goals. You are self-defined!
