It was a cold, windy day and the sun was out. At home we were all excited to start the birthday celebration for my sister who was turning seventeen. We started the day as usual; like all weekends we cleaned the house while my mother went to fetch my sister from the bus stop. She was living in Port Elizabeth and usually came and celebrated her birthday with us. My older brother went to buy a cake. As I was cleaning the house with my younger sister and brother we were playing music loudly; we were happily dancing, having fun.

A few hours later, after we were done cleaning the house, my mother came with my sister and two beautiful girls. At that moment I saw on my mother’s face that something was wrong but I couldn’t tell what it was. But she was not herself. My dearest father came in later with his wife and two kids. As usual, she was drunk and he asked us to assist him to carry things from the car.

My mother called me and asked, “Where is your brother?”

We tried calling but he didn’t pick up his phone. We continued trying to call him and it went to voice mail. Luckily my father bought the cake and it was decided that we will use his but still my mum was not happy. Moreover she was angry that my father brought his wife and kids and my sister invited her friends without telling us and now my brother was missing. While my mother was shouting and stressing, there was my brother and he was drunk but he brought everything that he was sent to buy.

Later that day we started the celebration. While I was in my room looking for my jacket, Sindisiwe, one of my sister’s friends, came in. I’m not sure what she wanted but we started chatting. One thing led to another and before I knew it, she pulled a condom out. As she was breathing fast in my ears she insisted to use condom.

The music was loud and people were having fun. We were both drunk and the only thing in my mind was sex. I took the condom out, pretending to use it and I dropped it. When we woke up it was almost 10 p.m. and we went back to the party. My sister noticed that we were both missing and she called me aside.

“Whatever you are doing use a condom because as you know I have HIV. I need you to know that Sindisiwe is positive too.”
