It is our Christian duty to obey our parents and it is the right thing to do. It should not only apply to the Christian faith but to any home. We are told to obey and honour our parents. It is also one of the Ten Commandments in the Bible.

In the following scriptures, Ephesians 6:1, Proverbs 1:8 and Exodus 20:12, it says we must obey God who created us and respect Him by obeying our parents. Many people suffer consequences due to disobedience. If we do not want to suffer consequences, we must be obedient.

The scriptures wrote about disobedience penalties and the outcome of obedience. We have a choice whether to be obedient or disobedient, but each choice has its consequences or rewards. There is a reward to being obedient and consequences to being disobedient.

The penalty of disobedience is found in Leviticus 20 and the outcome of obedience is found in Leviticus 26:1-3. Obedience is better because there will be rain for our crops, peace in our land, our enemies will be defeated, God will bless us with children, God will keep His covenant with us, our harvest will be multiplied and God will be our God and we will be His people, He will be with us.

The punishment of disobedience will be that God will leave us. He will punish us with incurable diseases, wars, our enemies will conquer us and God will turn against us and He will not protect us anymore.

Complaining often leads to disobedience. We must learn to put our hope in God, in every situation we face, if we trust in Him, it will go well. The Israelites complained to God whenever they faced a situation which led them to make an idol, a golden calf. The Lord was disappointed and His wrath came upon them.

Many did not enter the Promised Land because of their disobedience, including Moses. Moses knew he would not enter it, but he encouraged the people to continue to obey God. He urged the Israelites to read and follow the laws, found in Deuteronomy 4:1-4 and Deuteronomy 6:10-25.

“Obedience can make you feel at peace, and God’s love will endure us and He will fight for us and protect us.” Deuteronomy 7:12-26 is proof of that. The Bible was actually written for us to remember the laws in order that we have a long life. (Deuteronomy 7:11-20)

Disobedience results in death. Deuteronomy 10:12-22 says that anyone who sins will never receive their share in the Kingdom of God. God is always ready to accept a repentant heart. Repentance meaning that you turn away completely from your sins and live a new life and this will please God as you are showing Him obedience.

God is patient with us, He gives us time to repent and turn back to Him. He wants us to believe Him and follow His law and commandments. Even the Israelites were given land but persisted to be stubborn and disobey God. In Deuteronomy 9 God says He wants us to know Him and be closer to Him. From the book of Genesis to the book of Numbers, He keeps encouraging us to obey His laws that were written in the times of Moses.

His laws are followed even today, except in some churches the laws of Moses are subtracted. God is not pleased with that. He wants us to obey all of His laws. He is our Creator and King, we are the servants who always obey and listen to our Master, God.

Obedience enables us to be closer to God. If we are faithful He hears us and is with us, like He was with Joshua. In Joshua 10, Joshua commanded the sun to stand still and it did. He had always obeyed God and had no sin in Him, because of that God honoured Him.

All the commandments are there for our own good. He also instructs us on how to live our life and how to handle situations such as inheritance and unsolved murders, etc. Obedience enables us to prosper because God is beside us.

These days, you no longer hear about turning back to God and obeying Him, it is as if the commandments are in the past. During the time of Adam and Eve we have to choose what is good and what is evil. We need to choose doing good and listening to God when He speaks to us.

God speaks to those who love Him; you show your love by being obedient. We are too stubborn to realise His love and care. We become ignorant to obey Him because of our own desires. God keeps giving us chances to start obeying Him but we are blinded by the lust of our lives.

In the times of Moses the law was read every seven years in order that everyone remembers them well. We would always remember if this was done in our generation. But now we have to meditate on the word everyday so that we can please God and become closer to Him, to know what is right and what is wrong.

Obedience becomes easier when we treasure the law in our hearts. God tests us in order to see if we will obey Him in difficulties. Job was tested to see if He would still be faithful to God even when famine hit his life. In the end he was rewarded for his faithfulness.

Abraham was tested to see if he loved God more than his son. He waited years for his son, when he finally had him, God told him to sacrifice him. Although he did not understand, he knew God would provide and he was willing and obedient. God stopped him from doing it and knew then and there that Abraham was truly faithful. Would you have had such faith in God? (Genesis 22:1-19)

We should guard ourselves, so that we don’t turn away from Him. Hebrews 11:5, Jesus obeyed what God instructed Him to do. Jesus taught the disciples what to do and before he ascended into heaven, he gave a final instruction and that was to teach the word of God wherever we went.

God is the giver of life and he takes it away. The law remains until the end. We will never receive anything from God by being disobedient. We are commanded to not have a stubborn heart but a willing and obedient heart.

The choice still lies with us, but it has to be told that obedience is better than to rebel. Great obedience awaits those who are obedient disaster awaits those who are disobedient. It is good to teach our children from a young age that obedience is better.
