Waking up with a groggy headache, I sat up on my bed and wondered where I was.

“Shit!” I curse, as I remember what went down at our year-end office party last night.

I had a chat with one guy who was always reserved and alone. Knowing me, I talked non-stop until he started to loosen up.

“I’m Michael, by the way,” he introduces himself.

“Haha, I know sweetheart, always so rude and never wanting to socialise with people,” I say as the alcohol fuels me.

“Wow! Ok, I didn’t think that’s what you all think of me, actually I wasn’t always like this you know,” he rambles as he shifts around on his chair.

“Care to share? I’m super curious right now,” I ask curiously.

He scoffs and looks at me with a twinkle in his eye that rattles my insides and leaves me wondering if I’ll ever get over this guy. I have a crush on him, by the way.

“Humph! Can’t believe I’m about to say this but I can’t keep this a secret forever,” he says looking down at his hands.

Actually I’m a little scared to hear what he’s about to say.

“I had a babysitter from when I was eight years until I was eighteen, who loved me very much and I likewise. Drew, who was ten years my senior, was everything to me and mom would sometimes joke about how I seemed to forget her as I always seek out Drew for everything I wanted and needed. We trusted each other so much and we were always honest with each other, never lied to each other.”

A week before my 18th birthday I got home and found the house silent. I wondered what had happened as Drew always left home after I arrived from school. I went straight up to my room and took my clothes off as usual. Out of nowhere, I heard my bedroom door close and I jumped as I knew that no one was around. I turned my head to see Drew topless, only clad in silk pyjama bottoms with a confusing look pasted on his face. I ask what was wrong but I got no answer only, Drew moved towards me and started caressing my body, telling me how hot I was, how sexy I was and pulled down my pants.”

I was so shocked that it took me a minute to comprehend what was happening. I started panicking as Drew pushed me on my bed and started kissing and licking my skin. My heart pounded so much as I screamed while pushing Drew off my body, but it was useless as I was just a tiny boy compared to Drew. I screamed my lungs out calling for help. You know, that was the first time I felt helpless. As I closed my eyes, I wished I was dead. Pain ripped through my whole body as Drew raped me as if his life depended on it.”

After he was done, he sat down next to me and said that he loved me and he had waited so long for this moment and he knew I was waiting for it too, looking at how I always behaved around him. I mean, how could he have the guts to say that to me after what he did. The funny thing is I never told my mom what happened but just told her that I didn’t need a babysitter anymore as I could take care of myself. From that day on, I always kept to myself, becoming scared of people and always questioning their motives when they tried to be nice to me. Okay that’s the story of my life, hope I answered all your questions twirling in that beautiful mind of yours,” Michael concluded after telling me his story.

A lonely tear ran down my cheek as I listened to him knowing how much it must have hurt him to tell me this. I mean, I never expected this to be the reason for his behaviour towards us as his co-workers. I immediately stood from my chair and hugged Michael and he was surprised at first but then he hugged me back. From that day on, I realised that we should never be too quick to judge others as everybody has their own story as to why they are the way they are.
